I had run into 43Things a couple times and only gave it a glance. Today I gave it a good look, too, because of the Salon article. I'm guessing that 43Things gained more users than it ticked off through their non-disclosure of the Amazon connection.
43Things is pretty neat. It's fun and social. It provides an excellent goal-setting service. And yes, the data is very useful. Is using that data to help Amazon sell more books worse than the Google Ads along the right side of each page?
